Professionally packaged CDs or DVDs are created by one of two processes: duplication or replication. For both options, a variety of packaging options are offered, including plastic cases, paper sleeves or printed cardboard sleeves (often called digipaks).

Typical costs:
  • CD or DVD packaging, including copied discs and professionally printed sleeves, typically costs from 50 cents -$3 per copy. These prices are for bulk orders of 100 to 1,000 copies, and rates vary based on the type of packaging used and the size of the order.
  • Materials affect the cost of CD or DVD packaging. ProAction Media sells a bundle of 2,000 CDs for $1.39 each (slim-line cases), $1.69 each (plastic jewel cases) or $2.99 each (printed cardboard digipaks).
  • The larger the CD or DVD order, the cheaper the price per item. For instance, QuickTurn Duplication offers retail-ready DVD packaging ranging from $1.75 each (500 copies) to $3.25 each (50 copies). The package includes DVD duplication, printing on the front of the disc and a printed wrap for the plastic DVD case. They also offer shrink-wrapped and retail-ready CDs in jewel cases ranging from $1.11 (1,000 copies) to 62 cents (20,000 copies).
  • Generic CD or DVD packaging ordered in bulk typically ranges from 5 cents per paper sleeve to 30 cents per plastic DVD case. Amazon offers paper CD/DVD sleeves from 3 cents each, plastic jewel cases from 15 cents each and plastic DVD cases from 25 cents each with free shipping.
  • Designing the cover art for a CD or DVD typically costs $150 -$700, depending on the number of panels or pages. For example, The Visual Sense will design disc artwork for $98 or a 4-panel CD inlay for $585 (printing not included).
What should be included:
  • Packaging options include paper sleeves, plastic jewel (CD) cases, plastic Amaray (DVD) cases and printed cardboard sleeves. Photos of many packaging options are available at MJK Disc Production.
  • CD or DVD designers should let the client see a final proof before it is printed.
Additional costs:
  • Ground shipping for a bulk order of CDs or DVDs typically adds $10 -$15 (typical for 100 copies) or $50 -$130 (typical for 1,000 copies). Rush orders are more expensive. An order of 1,000 blank CDs in jewel cases from Ultra Products ships for $57, for example.
Shopping for cd or dvd packaging:
  • CD or DVD duplication is a process that "burns" content from a master to a pre-existing DVD or CD disc, which is most often used for orders of 1,000 copies or fewer. Replication, a process where data is burned from the master copy while simultaneously creating a new CD or DVD disc from an injection mold, is best for orders of 1,000 copies or more.
  • Before placing a large CD or DVD order, contact the company to request samples. Oasis Disc Manufacturing sends potential customers samples of its Eco-Packaging along with a coupon for future orders.
